Tour overview
On your Gobi Tour you will experience the wide
range of Mongolia’s incredible natural beauty,
meet her warm and friendly people, sample her
traditional and contemporary culture, all in just
one week. After arriving in the modern capitol
of Ulaanbaatar, you’re off to the startlingly
diverse landscapes of Gobi desert, with extraordinary
white sand dunes, lunar landscapes, grassy pastures
and rocky mountains, and red sandstone formations,
holding the world’s largest dinosaur excavations
and fossil beds.
We continue to Terelj, where you can stroll barefoot
on green meadows carpeted with edelweiss in this
spectacular valley, surrounded by stunning rock
formations and forests. We will hike, take photos,
watch birds, ride camels and horses and at night
we stay in the gers, age old home to Mongolia’s
nomadic people, ride.
Day 1
Arrive in Ulaanbaatar and spend your first night
at the Tuushin hotel. After lunch, there’s sightseeing
in Ulaanbaatar, featuring a trip to the Gandan
Monastery, to see and hear the monks chanting,
the several glorious temples adorned with gold
and jewels, and the giant indoor Buddha. Then
it’s up to Zaisan Hill to see the lovely panorama
of Ulaanbaatar. From there we return to the City
to visit the National History Museum, with its
outstanding collection of dinosaur bones, found
in the Gobi Desert. In the evening, there will
be a live performance of traditional folklore
including music and dances.
Day 2
After breakfast we take off from Buyant Ukhaa
airport on a flight to the South Gobi. After landing,
we drive to Three Camels Lodge ger camp and check-in.
Then it’s a short drive to Yoliin Am to see the
valley with its waterfalls, and picnic. Then we
will go to Bayanzag to see the flaming red cliffs
and the area where the famous American expedition
in the 1920’s made the first discovery of dinosaur
eggs and bones. After sunset we return to the
ger camp for the night.
Day 3
After light breakfast we depart by jeep for the
giant sand dunes of Khongoriin Els, along the
Altai Mountain range. There will be brief stops
along the way to explore the beauty of the Gobi.
The scenery will change into vast open steppe
that meets the horizon on one edge and rocky mountains
on the other side. Occasionally, you will see
nomadic families’ gers in the distance. The drive
will take 6-8 hours to reach the Juulchin 2 ger
camp.
Day 4
It’s time to enjoy Khongoriin Els’ endless sand
dunes and the beautiful oasis next to it. There
is time to hike, ride camels, and to explore these
massive sand dunes. The two-humped camels are
very comfortable to ride, as they walk slowly
and gently. You will be well supported by their
humps, sitting comfortably between them. After
lunch, we drive back to Three Camels Lodge ger
camp and stay overnight there.
Day 5
In the morning, we drive to the Juulchin camp
airport for the hour and a half flight back to
Ulaanbaatar. Today’s sightseeing includes visits
to Bogd Khan Palace Museum, where the last religious
King of Mongolia resided, and the Zanabazar Fine
Arts Museum. There is also a tour to visit the
art studios of many of Mongolia’s most acclaimed
artists. Overnight lodging is at the Tuushin Hotel.
Day 6
After breakfast, we will drive to Terelj and will
see and explore the many stunning natural formations
and beauties. Here you experience another dimension
of Mongolian nature quite different from the Gobi
desert. You can hike, horse back ride and take
photos. In the late afternoon, we return to Ulaanbaatar
for some last minute shopping, dinner and a final
night out on the town.
Day 7
In the morning, check out from the hotel, transportation
is provided to Buyant Ukhaa Airport and you depart
from Mongolia. But reassured to know that no one
visits Mongolia just once!
