Generally, everyone entering Mongolian territory
must have a visa. However, because of bilateral
agreements made with some countries, this is not
always the case. The following nationals can travel
to Mongolia without visa:
- Nationals of Kazakhstan for up to 3 months;
- Nationals of Malaysia and Israel for up to 1
month;
- Nationals of the USA, if entering the country
as a tourist, for stays of up to 3 months;
- Nationals of the Philippines for up to 3 weeks;
- Nationals of Hong Kong and Singapore for up
to 14 days;
- Nationals of Cuba for up to 1 month;
(Note: Nationals of India need a visa but can
obtain one free of charge)
All types of visas can be obtained from Mongolian
Embassies, Consulates, Honorary Consulates, Trade
and Permanent Missions abroad and also form the
Visa and Passport Division of the Ministry of
External Relations, in Ulaanbaatar. Mongolian
visas have an “entry” and an “exit” part to them.
Please make sure that when you are receiving your
visa, you have both the “entry” and “exit” part
stamped. In case you have some difficulties, please
contact us or one-month tourist visas can be obtained
on-the-spot at arrival in Mongolia (airport and
railway customs clearance), although the visa
situation is subject to change from time-to-time.
For all types of visa application, you will need
your passport, a completed application form and
at least one passport-size photograph. Passports
should be valid for a minimum period of 6 months.
Some nationals will require confirmation and approval
for the intended visit from the appropriate travel
company or business organization. There are standard
charges depending on the types of visas. Practically
a 30-days tourist visa can be obtained from any
Mongolian Embassy abroad within 24 hours for approximately
US$ 40.00. Additional fees are charged for urgent
visa. To apply for a tourist visa for a period
of time longer than two months a letter of invitation
from the inviting organization is required. It
is not required for periods shorter than two months
although you will need a letter from your travel
company.
Visitors are also advised to obtain proper transit
visa from Korea, China or Russia. There were cases
when foreigners who failed to secure two time
transit visa were denied entrance to these countries
on their way back home from Mongolia. Visitors
staying longer than 30 days are required to apply
for registration with the police within 10 days
of arrival. Visitors who fail to register and
who stay longer than 30 days may be stopped at
departure, denied exit, and fined. Remember that
procrastination with visa extension may result
in several visits to the Ministry of External
Relations and up to $ 5.00 fine for each day after
visa has expired. Visitors planning to stay for
more than 180 days should obtain long-term residence
permission.
